KG Knutsson’s new automated distribution centre is the latest challenge for Moving
KG Knutsson (KGK) is the general distributor for world-leading manufacturers of technically advanced, high-quality products for both the automotive and the marine industry, with over 120,000 items in their product range. The decision to consolidate three separate warehousing operations into one new distribution centre represents a major change in the company’s logistics strategy. Scandinavian company Moving was given the job of designing and implementing a complete solution.
KGK and Moving together are building a new, fully automated warehouse close to Enköping in central Sweden. The new total area is 30,000 square metres, compared with the former 19,000 square metres. The great benefit of the new solution from Moving is that about 80% of the articles will be held in an area of only 3,800 square metres.
“Moving presented a solution which doubles our stock-turn, increases our picking capacity while using fewer resources and ensures fast delivery. This is strategically important, as our customers are ever more demanding. Short lead times are today critical for maintaining customer loyalty,” says Magnus Almgren, logistic manager of KGK.
Ulf Jansson, CEO of Moving, explains “By supplying the latest technology for the automated warehouse, we enable KGK to maximize the utilization of both space and capacity.”
Moving focuses entirely on customer-specific solutions made from their own systems. The new warehouse will be equipped with miniload cranes, pick stations, pick facade, vertical carousels and trucks for picking from pallets. Swedish logistics consultants Alfakonsult carried out the pre-study in co-operation with Moving’s project managers.
The capacity of the new warehouse and the geographically strategic location will allow KGK to increase the stock-turn by buying more frequently in smaller lot sizes.
“The trends in today’s market demand that we maximize our flexibility. Efficient warehouse logistics are keys to strengthening and maintaining our competitiveness.” says Magnus Almgren, KGK
Ulf Jansson adds: “We can see an increased awareness amongst companies of the importance of logistics for their profitability. By always challenging the logistics, we develop and improve our customer’s performance - and KGK’s new distribution centre is for us an inspiring challenge. It is a demonstration that we offer outstanding solutions.” Since the 4th of June Moving is part of the KNAPP-group with its headoffice in Graz, Austria.
“With KNAPP as our owner we now can offer a much broader range of products to the Scandinavian market which will be interesting especially in terms of efficient picking solutions. Furthermore it will bring new markets segments to Moving as well as the possibility to work on much larger projects”, says Ulf Jansson CEO of Moving.
