Moving helps Elkem Solar challenge traditional manufacturing
Elkem Solar – owned by Orkla, one of the largest listed companies in Norway – will soon be the proud owners of the first plant in the world which can produce silicon through a purely metallurgic process. The new plant will make Elkem the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly producer of silicon on the market. The energy consumption per produced kg of silicon drops considerable compared to today’s traditional production methods. Elkem’s objective is to be able to produce silicon at a lower cost than any other supplier on the market. Such is the demand for Elkem Solar Silicon® that already today the entire production capacity up to 2012 has been sold.
Moving is one of the companies that will help Elkem turn the new manufacturing concept into reality at the new factory in Kristiansand. Moving will deliver a conveyor system linking the different steps in the production process. The system is the result of close and successful co-operation between Tronrud Engineering AS and Moving. The first finished products will be delivered during summer 2008 and from then on solar panel manufacturers around the world will be able to benefit from Elkem’s revolutionary manufacturing process.
For Moving this application represents a significant step into a new market – one where Moving has not been active before. This is in line with Moving’s strategy to deliver new, innovative and efficient logistics solutions. Elkem is a company in an exciting and future-oriented sector, and it is Moving’s wish that this project will open doors by demonstrating how elements of traditional materials handling can be applied in entirely new and innovative ways.
Challenge the logistics, develop the business!
