Distribution and Sorting

Distribution
In the distribution process, a goods unit/article will be identified, addressed and sorted. Using manual handling, the process is simple. In this case the operator can just pick up and check a goods unit/article, make a decision on destination and then proceed with placement at the relevant location. However, when using mechanised handling, every goods unit/article must be given an identity - an article or address code - for mechanised scanning linked to the control unit. This in turn sends an impulse to automatic handling systems, which include transfer functions that move the goods unit/article to the place indicated by the control system.

Sorting
In the sorting process, the goods unit/article is identified and addressed to enable automatic sorting. In storage systems, sorting is carried out during intake and retrieval of a goods unit/article.

For order picking, the goods unit/article is placed on a load carrier that has been allocated to the order in question and no action is needed from the sorting unit.

However, in batch picking the sorting unit must be used for the splitting up of the goods unit into respective orders.

In production systems, sorting is carried out between different production stages. Either units are selected from a production buffer for continued processing or non-approved units are outsorted after a sub-stage in the production process.
