Handling of unit loads
Load carriers such as tote bins and boxes come in many different designs, materials and formats. The design is affected by the requirements that the material or goods set for the load carrier, how it is moved and stored, stipulations for the securing or fixing of the load and how often it will be handled and transported.
A unit load will preferably be designed so that it can remain intact in the transport chain for as long as possible. This contributes to more economical transport and handling.
The most common formats are multiples of the standard pallet (EUR pallet) dimensions - a format such as 400x600 mm. The tote bins can be given a slightly conical shape and fitted with carrying attachments. This means that empty tote bins can be stacked inside each other and, when loaded, on each other. Tote bins can also be fitted with lids.
In contrast, other types of boxes are collapsible for return transport. For storage purposes there are also slim, deep boxes in various widths and designs with, for example, different types of handle and room for labels.
In industry, the trend in materials supply to processing units and assembly lines has been towards fewer goods units and greater goods flows. This applies, for instance, to picking, sorting, addressing and buffering. Tote bins and boxes replace pallets as the general load carrier
Both tote bins and boxes are often used as load carriers in mechanised storage and handling systems, such as paternoster lifts, automatic hoists, miniload stores and conveyor systems.
In the selection of a load carrier, a decisive factor is where in the production and/or handling chain it is to be used. Similarly, the goods and type of handling also influence the choice. Factors such as noise levels, recycling and fire safety should also be considered in the selection of a load carrier.
Moving supplies complete equipment for handling, transport and storage of tote bins and boxes, as well as control equipment for complex systems.
Moving's commitment can include on-site assembly, aftersales service and training of operating and service staff.
Moving supplies systems and equipment to the consumer goods, tools, food, pharmaceutical, car spare parts, mail order and 3PL industries, as well as to mail terminals and other kind of distribution centres.
